UK Salary After Tax — 2025/26 Guide

All salary calculations on this hub use the official 2025/26 HMRC tax rates. The Personal Allowance is £12,570 — income below this threshold is completely tax-free. Income between £12,571 and £50,270 is taxed at the Basic Rate of 20%, with National Insurance at 8% on the same band.

Earnings above £50,270 enter the Higher Rate band (40%), with NI dropping to 2%. If your income exceeds £100,000, your Personal Allowance begins to taper at £1 for every £2 earned, creating an effective marginal rate of 60% between £100,000 and £125,140 — the so-called £100k tax trap.

Scotland operates its own income tax bands, which differ significantly from England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Scottish taxpayers pay a Starter Rate of 19%, Basic Rate of 20%, Intermediate Rate of 21%, Higher Rate of 42%, Advanced Rate of 45%, and Top Rate of 48% — use the Scotland pages above for accurate Scottish calculations.
